Breaking Camp and Final Canyon Views
Our last night at the Grand Canyon campsite turned out just fine, rewarding us with a good, deep sleep that helped ease our tired muscles after the previous day’s strenuous hike. Waking up refreshed, we prepared our morning breakfast, dismantled our tents, and packed everything securely into the car.
Before officially leaving the park behind, we drove to another scenic Grand Canyon viewpoint, stretching our legs with a pleasant 30-minute walk along the rim to take in one last panoramic look at the breathtaking abyss.
The Drive to Nevada and the Desert Heat
With our sights set on Nevada, Steven and I took turns sharing driving duties for the four-and-a-half-hour journey. The route treated us to stunning vistas of wide deserts and rugged canyons, but it also delivered an unexpected climate shock: as we approached the valley, we were met with an extraordinary and intense heat wave, with temperatures soaring up to 47°C (116°F)!
Checking In and Diving Into the Neon Oasis
After five straight days of sleeping in tents and living out of our camping gear, we finally reached our hotel and traded the rugged outdoors for pure urban luxury. We checked into the famous Treasure Island Hotel, which will serve as our home for the next two nights.
- Cooling Off: To beat the staggering desert heat, we immediately spent a couple of hours relaxing and cooling off in the hotel’s swimming pool.
- Dinner and Line Dancing: Later, we headed over to Gilley’s Saloon, Bar-B-Q & Dance Hall, where we enjoyed a savory dinner and even joined in on the fun with some lively line dance lessons.
- The Fremont Experience: At around 9:00 PM, we ventured out to the historic Fremont Street area in downtown Las Vegas, marveling at the dazzling overhead light shows, vibrant street performers, and the buzzing nightlife that makes this city so unique.
